Tapping Into the Masculine Voice

May 31, 2023 11:00AM ● By Jessica Scofield-Chichester, PhD, Rev
In today’s world, gender is a topic of constant debate and conversation. And while we often hear about the importance of supporting women and encouraging them to find their voice, we rarely hear about the importance of supporting men and helping them to tap into their own unique masculine voice. But the truth is that both men and women have important roles to play in our society, and it’s only by supporting and encouraging everyone to be their authentic selves that we can truly create a better world.

So what does it mean to tap into the masculine voice? For starters, it means embracing the qualities that are traditionally associated with masculinity, such as strength, assertiveness and independence. But it is important to remember that these qualities aren’t limited to men, and women can possess them as well. However, for men specifically, tapping into their masculine voice means being true to themselves and not feeling pressured to conform to society’s expectations of what a man should be. This includes embracing their emotions and vulnerability, as well as their strength and resilience.

Unfortunately, in today’s society, men are often discouraged from showing vulnerability or asking for help. They’re told to be strong and stoic at all times, even when they are struggling with mental health issues or other challenges. This can lead to a sense of isolation and disconnection, which can in turn lead to more serious issues like depression and suicide. That’s why it is so important for us to offer more support to men of all races, so they can feel empowered to be their most authentic, compassionate selves.

One way we can offer this support is by creating spaces where men can come together and talk openly about their experiences and emotions. This could be in the form of support groups, men’s circles or even just casual conversations with friends. By normalizing the idea of men being vulnerable and expressing their emotions, we can create a culture where it’s okay to ask for help when you need it, and where it’s seen as a sign of strength to be able to admit when you’re struggling.

Another important way we can support men is by challenging harmful stereotypes and cultural norms that perpetuate toxic masculinity. This includes things like the idea that men shouldn’t show emotions, or that they need to be dominant and aggressive in order to be successful. By promoting healthier and more positive ideas about masculinity, we can create a more inclusive and supportive culture for everyone.

Of course, it’s not just about supporting men in the abstract. It is also important to recognize that men of different races and backgrounds may face unique challenges and experiences. For example, Black men in America are often stereotyped as dangerous or threatening, which can lead to discrimination and bias in various aspects of their lives. By recognizing and acknowledging these challenges, we can work to create more equitable and just systems that support all men, regardless of their race or background.

Ultimately, the goal of supporting men isn’t to create a society where men are dominant or privileged over women. Rather, it is about recognizing that everyone has something valuable to contribute, and that we all benefit when everyone is able to be their most authentic and empowered selves. By supporting men in this way, we can create a culture that is more compassionate, inclusive and supportive for everyone.

In conclusion, tapping into the masculine voice is an essential part of creating a better world for everyone. By encouraging men to embrace their true selves, we can promote healthier ideas about masculinity, challenge harmful stereotypes and cultural norms and create a more inclusive and supportive culture for all. By offering more support to men of all races, we can help them to be their most powerful, authentic and compassionate selves, and create a world where everyone can thrive.
