Adopting a Pet: A Healthy Prescription
Want a healthy dose of unconditional love? The Animal Welfare Society, Inc (AWS) has lots of furry friends looking to find the companionship of permanent, loving homes. AWS is an independent, non-profit, no-kill animal shelter, founded in 1965, dedicated to finding loving, forever homes for abandoned, abused and stray cats and dogs in New Milford, Brookfield, Bridgewater, Roxbury and Washington. Each year hundreds of stray dogs and abandoned cats, along with some rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs and birds, find refuge there. Even if the responsibility of caring for an animal is not something you can take on, the shelter always welcomes volunteers to walk dogs, socialize dogs and cats, help with the daily maintenance, or assist in fundraising events.
Studies show that sharing your home with a companion animal adds several health benefits to your life, including lower blood pressure, increased self-esteem and lower incidences of depression in older adults, as well as an increased sense of well-being. So if you want to feel better, get healthy and stay healthy, try adopting a pet.
