At least 30 percent of Connecticut’s entire energy load could soon be developed through off-shore wind sources. This will be the largest authorization by load—up to 2,000 megawatts—by any state in the region, according to Governor Ned Lamont.

The Departments of Energy and Environmental Protection commissioner will soon be soliciting bids to develop the plan. According to legislation newly signed into law by Lamont, the commissioner has 14 days to begin the request for proposals process.

Both Democratic and Republican proponents say they hope Connecticut will become a central hub for the off-shore wind industry in New England. The emerging industry could lead to plenty of jobs and drive economic growth along the shoreline, predicts Lamont.

Lamont recently announced a $93 million public-private investment to accommodate wind-turbine generator assembly and staging at State Pier, in New London.
