Norwalk Festival Spotlights Diversity
From 5:30 to 10pm on June 15 at the restored 1809 homestead Fodor Farm, Norwalk International Cultural Exchange (NICE) is hosting Destination India to celebrate Indian culture. In keeping with the nonprofit’s mission to promote and increase awareness of the diversity of people from around the world, the event will celebrate various cultural traditions and foods from India. The festive reception will also celebrate the countdown to the second annual NICE Festival, to be held on July 8 at Norwalk’s Oyster Shell Park.
Destination India will be held in the Barn at Fodor Farm which features a demonstration kitchen and a large outdoor patio overlooking the landscape. The evening’s cultural entertainment will include Bhangra dance, Sikh martial arts (Gatka) demonstrations, Indian cooking demonstrations and tastings, henna art and more. Additional support for the event is provided by the City of Norwalk Department of Recreation & Parks, Patel Brothers, J.P. Morgan Chase, Tawa Indian Cuisine, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Foundation Sikh Community of CT, and Trendy Henna.
Tickets are $35 and include food tasting and one drink. Proceeds and donations from Destination India will go towards supporting the NICE summer festival, a free one-day event open to all ages, and run in collaboration with the City of Norwalk Department of Recreation and Parks and the Norwalk Arts Commission.
More than 5,000 people celebrated the inaugural NICE festival in 2016 with a wide range of cultural foods, music and artistic expression along the shores of Norwalk River. This year’s festival will be held on July 8 from 11am to 8pm. Performances will include live bands offering bluegrass, Zydeco, Cuban jazz, Caribbean music and various artistic forms across multiple traditions. There will be an assortment of family-friendly creative activities; food trucks; and education, health and environmental exhibits.
