Learning More about Teaching Chair Yoga
The Yoga Teachers Association (YTA) of the Hudson Valley will be hosting Teaching Chair Yoga with Julia Hough on May 13 at Club Fit in Briarcliff Manor, New York.
Chair yoga brings yoga to those who cannot stand or who lack the mobility to move from standing to seated postures. Warming up in a chair can also help those with flexibility issues, and chairs can provide feedback for beginners doing standing poses.
In this three-hour workshop, participants will learn adaptations of traditional asanas using a chair, including a standing and a seated sun salutation. Hough will share a joint-freeing series and other movements for increasing range of motion, as well as techniques for sharpening students’ focus. She will also share mudras that she often uses and lead participants through a fully satisfying seated savasana.
The cost is $45 for YTA members and $65 for nonmembers who register in advance; it is $55 and $75 , respectively, at the door. Preregistration is requested at YTAYoga.com. Parking is available. Bring a yoga mat and arrive early to check in and set up.
When Julia Hough began taking yoga classes in the 1970s, she felt she had come home to her body. In 2000, she left a career in academic publishing to become a yoga therapist; she has been teaching classes, workshops and private sessions ever since. Hough trained in Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy and Integrative Yoga Therapy in addition to studying with Judith Lasater, Amy Matthews and Ellen Saltonstall. For four years, she taught 200-hour yoga teacher training as an affiliate of Integrative Yoga Therapy. For the past six years, she has been teaching chair yoga to yoga teachers.
