Chiropractic: It's More Than You Think!
Nov 04, 2011 03:01PM ● By Dr. Richard Keuhn
As a profession, chiropractic was born in 1895 when Harvey Lillard was healed of deafness by the fi rst adjustment from D.D. Palmer. Early chiropractors practiced in secret locations with hidden entrances because they were often arrested and jailed for “practicing medicine without a license” until 1974, when Louisiana was the last of all 50 states to license Doctors of Chiropractic. Despite these persecutions, people of all ages sought out chiropractic treatment for almost every imaginable health condition because it worked!
In 1994 a multidisciplinary panel appointed by the United States Department of Health & Human Services, Agency for Health Care Policy & Research endorsed spinal manipulation as a preferred treatment for low back pain. Today, the majority of people that consult with a doctor of chiropractic have some type of back pain because numerous studies and clinical trials have shown the effectiveness of chiropractic treatment in relieving headaches, neck pain, whiplash and many other health problems. Doctors of chiropractic also rank among the highest in patient satisfaction because of effectiveness, communication, improved overall health and other benefits. But is the real value of a chiropractic adjustment merely to relieve pain? If so, why did D.D. Palmer try to help a deaf janitor by “cracking” his neck?
Chiropractic is the science, art and philosophy that states the nervous system including your brain and spinal cord, controls the function of every cell, tissue, organ and system of your body. The key term in chiropractic philosophy and treatment is “subluxation” which is a motion segment or vertebrae in which alignment, movement integrity, and/or physiological function are altered, although contact between the joint surfaces remains intact. This is often misconstrued as a “bone out of place” and while there can be a positional component to a subluxation, the most important aspect is how a subluxation affects the function of the nervous system.
Chiropractic teaches that the brain and spinal cord are the foundation of the nervous system and that anything that impairs function of brain, spinal cord or 31 pairs of spinal nerves has a negative impact on health, performance and well being. This basic concept explains how so many health problems respond favorably to chiropractic treatment and why so many patients report signifi cant health benefi ts and feelings of well being with chiropractic treatment.
The following quote by Thomas Edison shows that chiropractic’s role in health is much more than just pain relief. “The Doctor of The Future will give no medicine, but will interest his or her patients in the care of the human frame, in a proper diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease. ”Chiropractic – It’s More Than You Think!

DR. PATRICK GUERIN, FIAMA, DC
Westport Chiropractic
Chiropractic is based on the idea of removing imbalances both structural and postural in an effort to allow our body to heal itself. For this to happen the network of nerves and signals from your brain, down your spinal cord, to the network of nerves must be allowed to flow freely without any interruption. Dr. Guerin has the ability and skill to remove these interruptions or misalignments and allow the body to perform as it was meant to. He not only treats soft and hard tissue problems such as sciatica and joint pain, but using the DRX9000 Spinal Decompression System for disc herniation, stenosis, and degenerative disc disease, he also treats more significant health issues such as fibromyalgia, allergies, insomnia, headaches and more.

Chiropractic FAQ’s
What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts based upon the understanding that good health depends, in part, upon a normally functioning nervous system (especially the spine, and the nerves extending from the spine to all parts of the body). “Chiropractic” comes from the Greek word chiropraktikos, meaning “effective treatment by hand.” Chiropractic stresses the idea that the cause of many disease processes begins with the body’s inability to adapt to its environment. It looks to address these diseases not by the use of drugs and chemicals, but by locating and adjust¬ing a musculoskeletal area of the body which is functioning improperly.
What conditions benefit from chiropractic care?
Although chiropractic is used most frequently to relieve low back pain, studies have found it to be effective for a variety of conditions, such as migraine headaches, neck and shoulder pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, and infantile colic.
Do chiropractic adjustments hurt?
Under normal circumstances, adjustments don’t hurt. The patient may experience a minor amount of discomfort during the adjustment which lasts only seconds.
Is Chiropractic safe?
Chiropractic adjustments or manipula¬tions are very safe. The risk factor is estimated to be in excess of one million to one.
What kind of education and training do doctors of chiropractic have? Chiropractors receive an education that emphasizes neuromuscular diagnosis and treatment. Preparation for the prac¬tice of chiropractic is concentrated on three areas of learning; basic training in the biological and health sciences (anat¬omy, physiology, histology, biochemis¬try, clinical and radiological diagnosis); specialized training in the chiropractic discipline (theoretical studies, practice, diagnosis and applications); and exten¬sive clinical training.
Have any studies been published show¬ing what chiropractic is effective for?
Several studies have documented the effectiveness of chiropractic in reliev¬ing back pain. More recent studies have shown chiropractic to be effective in treating infantile colic and migraine headaches.
